Seafood Restaurant Serves Fresh Dishes in Gorgeous Setting

Sea Level Newburyport is not your average seafood restaurant! Since taking over the old Not Your Average Joe’s location at the city’s historic Firehouse Building in spring 2017, Sea Level has distinguished itself as the local destination for sandwiches, burgers, and market-fresh seafood served waterside with amazing views of the Merrimack River.

Sea Level offers an impressive raw bar and extensive appetizer menu featuring classic seafood starters such as steamers and fried clams (market price) plus more adventurous options including grilled octopus with carrot-rosemary white bean hummus, buffalo-style calamari, and house chowder fries – seasoned french fries topped with clam chowder and cheddar cheese. Entrees range from expertly prepared lobster, haddock, and yellowfin tuna dishes to local-inspired standouts like the “Plum Island Clambake” – 1¼ lb lobster served with littleneck clams, mussels, Italian sausage, smashed potatoes, and grilled corn.

But calling Sea Level a “seafood restaurant” doesn’t tell the whole story. Alongside the crab cakes and mussels, shrimp linguine and baked seafood pie you’ll also find roasted Statler chicken and steak tips, and even nachos and tacos. The local-focused drinks menu features 20 craft beers from Newburyport Brewing Company and Ipswich Ale Brewery.

Seating options are nearly as varied as the menu, with room for 140 indoors plus additional tables in a front patio across from Newburyport’s historic Market Square and in back overlooking a wide expanse of lawn with the boardwalk and Merrimack River just beyond. Inside, the clean, contemporary décor plays well against the traditional brick of the historic building it shares with the Firehouse Center for the Arts.

With its crowd-pleasing menu, ample seating, and great people watching, Sea Level Newburyport is the perfect seafood restaurant for a date or girls’ night out. It’s also a favorite among families looking to enjoy “something for everyone” in a fun, casual atmosphere.

Brine Oysters, Crudo + Chops - An Exceptional Dining Experience

Located on State Street in the historic Fowles building, Nancy Caswell’s Brine Oysters, Crudo + Chops serves up an inventive upscale menu of oysters, chops and more in a nautical atmosphere perfectly fit for a coastal New England town like Newburyport. Grab a front row seat at the bar where the oysters are shucked, a high or low top table in the dining area, or a seat on the patio to enjoy the weather—all seats offer a full dining menu. Reservations are accepted on the patio and in the dining room.

While you may come for the ambiance—including a giant wall mural of an octopus—you will certainly stay for the food and drink menu. Brine’s raw bar will not disappoint with oysters and shrimp cocktail accompanied by the restaurant’s signature sauces—habanero, creme fraiche, mignonette, and cocktail. Or splurge for the Power Tower and indulge in a collection of all items raw and poached. Just as the name eludes, Caswell’s restaurant doesn’t stop at just oysters. Diners can opt for a la carte chops with Brine’s signature steak sauce and pair them up with creative sides or small plates like cauliflower and truffle or smoked gouda grits. And regulars will tell you not to skip out on their deconstructed clam and pork chowder, the biscuits and caviar, or house-made bacon and eggs with fried oysters. Pair your meal with a glass of wine or a beer from Brine’s extensive beverage list or opt for one of their delicious cocktails like a tequila and pineapple concoction.

Previously located right next door on State Street, Brine’s move into the Fowles building tripled the restaurant’s capacity, a win for diners hoping to score a seat at this sought after spot. Owner and local Newburyport resident, Nancy Caswell, used the move as an opportunity to revitalize the well know historic location—preserving and maintaining the original character, including the iconic Fowles sign. Much like the building Brine is located in—the restaurant has a bit of history of its own. Brine was New England’s first oyster, crudo and chop bar.

A seasoned and respected restaurant owner, Caswell also owns and operates Brine’s sister restaurant, Oak + Rowan in Boston. At both restaurants she prides herself on having exceptional and knowledgeable staff that is well versed on the food and beverage menus. Patrons can expect attentive service and a quality meal every time.

Bob Lobster is a cherished tradition for locals and a destination for visitors. Owners, a.ka. The Bob Lob Crew, Paul Rooney, Jasmine Lewan, Brad DeLibero, and Kim-soo DeLiberoal are all local Plum Islanders. They purchased the restaurant and seafood market from THE Bob (and his wife Joyce) of Bob Lobster in 2017 with promises to carry on the tradition of offering high quality seafood in a friendly and laid back atmosphere.

Located diagonally across the street from the famous Plum Island Pink House, Bob Lobster offers both indoor and outdoor seating and is known for its beautiful sunset views over the Plum Island Marsh.

Customers walk up to the counter to place their order and the food is delivered to their tables. Outside seating is filled with casual picnic tables, including a covered area to protect against the elements, while inside has a sleek, nautical look with booths and tables. If you sit inside, you can also purchase beer and wine to pair with your meal.

Of course Bob Lobster is known for excellent lobsters, but they also serve delicious chowders, fried seafood, homemade crab cakes, salads, and Chef Brad’s specialty, poutines. Jasmine, in charge of operations but also a culinary trained Chef, features delicious drink specials that are a must try!

After you enjoy a wonderful lunch or dinner, make sure to visit their fresh seafood market to purchase fish, clams, scallops, and more for a home cooked meal the next day. Or if you don’t feel like being the chef, grab a homemade take and bake seafood pie or lobster mac n’ cheese.

Bob Hartigan, a commercial lobsterman for over 30 years, started selling his catch out of his home basement back in 1982 and became so well known that no sign was needed. The islanders always knew where to find him. Bob and his wife Joyce opened Bob Lobster restaurant and fresh seafood market back in 2001.
